Frequently Asked Questions About Brake Service

There are many critical parts that help your vehicle’s brake system slow and stop your car, truck, or SUV when you press the brake pedal. It is critical to understand that when one of the components is worn or damaged, it can compromise the safety of the vehicle and have a critical impact on the stopping distance. Most of the pieces of the brake system can be used for the life of the car or a great deal of its life without replacement as long as the consumable parts of the system are maintained and replaced as needed. Routine brake inspections, even when the brakes are working perfectly, can help you identify when you need to have brake service to replace items like brake pads that are meant to be replaced periodically. If you wait too long to replace the brake pads, the rotors can become damaged and require turning or replacement, which is more costly than brake pad replacement.

A brake inspection is recommended at least once each year when the brakes are functioning correctly. As the vehicle ages, you might want to increase the frequency of the brake inspections for added peace of mind and safety. A brake inspection will ensure that there is no damage to the parts and that the wear and tear is not excessive, ensuring your vehicle will stop safely and with the least stopping distance possible.

Our Toyota-trained automotive technicians will inspect each part in the brake system for damage, wear, or consumption, particularly in cases where parts are designed to be replaced at specific intervals. This comprehensive inspection includes:

  • Brake pads or shoes – the pads are considered consumable and are easily replaced
  • Calipers
  • Rotors or drums
  • Wheel cylinders
  • Hardware such as springs and adjustors
  • Hoses
  • Parking brake cable and connections
  • Fluid condition – a consumable item
  • Wheel bearings and grease which can be replaced as needed
  • Master cylinder fluid

When you are driving a vehicle that you use routinely, you could notice that the brake pedal feels softer or that the car is not stopping as quickly as it once did. These are indications of a possible issue with damage or wear and tear to the brakes. You could also notice these indications of brake issues in any vehicle, even if you do not drive it as often as your regular car:

  • A brake warning light on the dash is illuminated
  • There is a grinding or squealing sound when you touch the brake pedal
  • You feel vibration in the steering wheel when the brakes are applied
  • The vehicle pulls to one side when you apply the brakes
  • You notice a burning odor or see that fluid is leaking under the vehicle

If you notice any of these issues when driving your vehicle, reach out to the experts at Toyota of Scranton service department to book an appointment for brake service or schedule the service appointment online to ensure the integrity of your vehicle’s brakes and your safety. Taking a proactive approach at the first indication of an issue will also ensure the least damage and expense in repairing any damage to the brake system.
