Why Choose Toyota of Scranton for Your Oil Change?

One of the best ways to maintain your vehicle’s engine life and improve performance is by changing your car’s motor oil. When the oil in your Toyota is changed according to the manufacturer, the fuel efficiency is preserved, harmful contaminants are removed, and you will ensure that your vehicle runs smoothly. Come by Toyota of Scranton and have your oil changed by one of our professional service technicians.

Regular Oil Changes are Important

Oil was made to take on dirt, dust, and small amounts of water from the engine heating and cooling. Over time the oil breaks down and loses its effectiveness to take on contaminants from the engine, and therefore cannot protect the engine properly. The more a car is driven, the more dirt and water are collected in the oil. An oil filter is in charge of removing the dirt and contaminants from the oil, but over time the oil starts to degrade as additives are used up. Once all of these additives are gone, the oil becomes over-run with dirt and dust, and can no longer do its job. From there the oil and filter must be changed, and that’s where our service center comes in.

When Should You Change Your Oil?

The oil in your vehicle should be changed as often as suggested by the manufacturer, and can typically be found in your owner’s manual. Newer cars have sensors that can track engine temperatures and driving hours that are used to calculate the oil’s condition and then give an alert when it’s time for an oil change. Certified service technicians can also estimate how long your current oil change will last, or when you should get the next one. A vehicle can usually go 7,500 to 10,000 miles in between oil changes.

What’s the Right Oil?

Your car’s owner’s manual will typically tell you the type of oil that should be used in your Toyota. From there you can determine if your vehicle needs synthetic, high-performance, or high-mileage oil. Synthetic oil is perfect if you live in a place with a colder climate since synthetic oil can improve performance and durability in high and low temperatures. If you do a lot of city or highway driving, then high-performance oil would be best for your car. Lastly, if your car or truck has over 75,000 miles, then high mileage is the way to go.

Checking Your Vehicle’s Oil

The levels of oil in your vehicle should be checked in between oil changes to ensure that your vehicle doesn’t have a leak or any other problems. Some service technicians recommend using the dipstick to check your oil at least once a month. Park your car on level ground and make sure your engine is turned off before checking the oil in your vehicle. It is best to pay attention to the color of the oil as well as the levels. If it appears to be milky or a lighter color then there may be a leak of some kind. If this occurs, then schedule service with our service department right away.

Toyota Oil Change FAQs

As you consider getting an oil change, you may have questions. We have provided some frequently asked questions with answers to help you care for your vehicle.

The oil in your engine plays an important role with several jobs to do:

  • Oil lubricates the moving parts.
  • Oil reduces friction and can help prevent the engine from overheating.
  • The right oil level keeps everything moving properly.
  • Oil moves out any dirt and grime that gets into the engine.

You should check your owner’s manual for the timeline for your model. In general, vehicles using traditional oil should have an oil change about every 3000 miles. Vehicles using synthetic oil or synthetic blends can go longer, often up to 7500 miles or more.

You can use a different brand of oil, but the grade must be the same. You can also switch between synthetic and traditional motor oil with no problem.

With many of the newer models, it’s difficult to access the oil pan or other components. There’s also a risk of a mistake with an oil change or not recognizing an issue that needs to be addressed. A professional service technician at Toyota of Scranton can change your oil quickly and inspect the vehicle for any other issues that need to be taken care of.

Diesel oil has more additives than what you find with regular gasoline motor oils. Vehicles with diesel engines often need oil changes more frequently because they get dirtier than gasoline engines.

Your oil should be changed year-round to keep it performing well. In cold weather, you may want to start the engine to warm up the oil, making it easier for the oil to flow out. Cold oil is thicker and may not be as easily removed.

While adding oil can make sure you have enough in the engine to operate normally, it doesn’t get rid of the dirty oil. The new oil won’t work as effectively because it’s been mixed with the old, dirty oil. Topping off the oil is necessary in an emergency situation when the low oil light comes on, but it doesn’t replace the need for a full oil change.

We remove the old oil from the engine by pulling out the drain plug. We replace the old oil filter with a new one and add in new oil. We perform an inspection of the major components of your vehicle, such as the brakes and battery, checking hoses and belts. If we find anything that needs to be repaired or replaced, we’ll provide a written estimate for the cost of the job and help you schedule a time.
