Amvets Post 189

This year, Toyota of Scranton reaches out to local Pittston AMVETs Post 189 in the Dupont Borough for a generous donation in support of the services to the area the Post provides. Pittston AMVETs Post 189 gives Veterans of all branches of service Honor Guard Services, as well as many other Veteran-related outreach services local to the area. Toyota of Scranton has a longstanding relationship with AMVETs Post 189, and commemorated their Honor Guard services with the donation of a minivan to the organization in 2019. Toyota of Scranton has a dedicated community outreach program that continues, year after year, to provide help to local charitable and volunteer organizations throughout the area to best support their community.

The Greater Pittston AMVETS Post 189 consists of eighteen members that perform honor guard services for former service members. The Commander of the post is currently Bernie McDonald, and along with the Vice Commander Tom Skrzysowski and the other post members, they consider it an honor to respect veterans from all branches of service. The group provides several dozen honor guard services at funerals over the course of the year, providing a flag to the next of kin and three shells that represent duty, honor and service. Each service begins with an introduction of the veteran, the service to his country, and a poem and prayer over an American Flag.

Pittston AMVETS post 189 provides many other services throughout the area to best honor veterans. The group works with local students to help spread patriotism and respect for veterans. They also hold ceremonies to mark Veterans Day, Memorial day, and the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, many times participating in local parades and events honoring those holidays. They also hold events within the Post such as replacing and maintaining American flags at cemeteries, and participate in Arlington Cemetery’s Wreaths Across America Program to honor veterans. The Post also volunteers locally alongside minor construction projects, crime watch meetings, the fire department, and more. Amvets Post 189 hold regular meetings, as well as a Sons of AMVETS and a Ladies Auxiliary Group.
