Our family at Toyota of Scranton is dedicated to serving our Lackawanna County community by being actively involved in many local charities and volunteer organizations. Giving back to the ones that serve us most is something we hold dear to our hearts at Toyota of Scranton. In the past, we have provided Scranton Fire Department and Scranton Police Department with fully equipped emergency vehicles. Being part of Toyota allows us to have pride in offering a military rebate program that is just a little extra thanks to the people that do so much for us.

Our Service Manager Mike May showed off his Barbecuing prowess by preparing a BBQ feast for his coworkers and the veterans from VetStock. The feast consisted of various types of barbecue and all of the must-have sides to go with it.

Barbecue Outside of the Big Four

Pennsylvania and New England as a whole may not be the first location that comes to mind when you think barbecue, but not having a specific regional style opens the door to a more fulfilling barbecue experience. Pennsylvanians are given the liberty to take the best aspects of the big four barbecue styles to create a unique atmosphere with a well-rounded menu.

Carolina barbecue is known for being smoked using hardwoods like oak and hickory with a spritzing of vinegar-based liquids throughout the smoking process. If you have ever seen a whole hog roast, the originals were in the Carolinas.

Kansas City barbecue is known for a wide variety of meats like beef, pork, and lamb. KC’s take on barbecue is dry-rubbed slow smoking with a sauce served at the table. Kansas City barbecue sauce is tomato-based and thicker than most barbecue sauces.

Memphis barbecue is known for one thing in two different ways. The first thing that should come to mind when thinking about Memphis-style barbecue is ribs. With their focus being ribs, they specialize in both wet and dry rib styles. Dry ribs are ribs that are cooked using only a dry rub. Wet ribs generally start off with dry seasonings, but throughout the cooking process, barbecue sauce is slathered on top for a caramelized glazed that is sure to impress.
Texas barbecue is a beef dominant style because of its prevalence in the region, but pork and poultry are also popular along with various mutton types. Texas is broken down into three main styles that consist of East Texas, Central Texas, and Cowboy style.

With Pennsylvania being rather close to the Carolinas and Tennessee, they have a stronger influence than KC or Texas styles. While known for Philly Cheesesteak, a trip to Pennsylvania should most definitely ward a trip to a local barbecue joint.
